Indigenous University Orientation Course (IUOC)

Entrance requirements

Applicants must be Aboriginal people or Torres Strait Islanders as defined by ATSIC guidelines and turning 18 years, in their first year of study. Mature-age people are encouraged to apply.

Length of course

IUOC requires the completion of six units and should be completed in one academic year of full-time study. Again, students may choose part-time studies.

Entrance Requirements

The proposed course is open to all Indigenous students who have attained one of the following entrance requirements:
Year 12 WACE Certificate;
Just missed out on minimum TER Score;
Certificate 111 TAFE.

Alternate entry can be gained through:
(1) IUOC application process;
(2) Indigenous Student Intake Test program.

IUOC Application Process

To apply under this process you are invited to submit a 2 page personal statement outlining your goals and visions regarding university study. You might like to include areas of comment, such as:
  • career aspirations
  • consideration of financial support
  • what type of family support you have
  • your motivation for studying.
Your statement will be assessed and you will be invited to attend an interview to complete the application process.

Indigenous Student Intake Test (ISIT)

It is only necessary to sit the ISIT if you are considering obtaining entry directly to a degree, rather than the IUOC Bridging Course. The ISIT runs nine times a year at Mount Lawley Campus. Click here to download dates.

Mode of study

The Indigenous University Orientation Course (IUOC) is available externally, with some units online (*see below) and internally at Mt Lawley and Regional Centres subject to demand.

Choosing your units

Students will be counselled as to which units to select and in which order.

Transitional arrangements from AUOC (Aboriginal University Orientation Course) to IUOC

Arrangements are in place to enable students who have completed AUOC units but not the whole course, to receive credits towards the IUOC course.

AUOC Stage one

A course similar to the AUOC Stage One, previously conducted by Kurongkurl Katitjin, is now conducted by the West Coast College of TAFE based at Balga. Contact Julia Bradley: 08 9235 7890.

Study options

This course can be available externally (study from home). This is ideal for those who are or wish to be working during their studies.
It can be studied full- or part-time.

Course features:

The IUOC is designed to strengthen the learning skills of Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders in the context of their cultural and social aspirations.The course aims to prepare you for higher education (degrees) but it also fulfills many other purposes, including education for employment and education for its own sake.The course enables students to study in internal* or external modes with support from ITAS tutors and regional centre coordinators. (*Internal mode only if adequate demand.)The IUOC takes two semesters (12 months) to complete as a full-time student. However, you may decide to progress as a part-time student.

Scholarships are available for students enrolled in this course.

ABSTUDY

This course is ABSTUDY approved and HECS exempt.
